From The Amish Door Restaurant (Wilmot OH)
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. soda
Pour the water over the dates and soda. Cool, then add:
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. nuts, chopped
1 Tbsp. butter
1 c. flour
Bake in a 9"x 13" pan at 350F for about 25 minutes. Cool and cut into small squares.
1 c. brown sugar
1/4 tsp. soda
1 Tbsp. butter
2 c. water
Boil together for 15 minutes. Make a paste of:
1/2 c. white sugar
2 Tbsp. flour
1 egg yolk
Milk - enough to make a thin paste
Gradually pour the milk paste into the boiling liquid. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil again and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and add:
pinch salt
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp. maple flavouring
Cool.
Whipped cream (or other whipped topping).
Alternate layers of date cake, pudding and whipped topping in bowl. Top with banana slices.
