It's been a long while since you've received one of my newsletters.  I've been very busy.  John and I flew to Australia on December 16th (via Shanghai) and had 6 weeks looking in on friends in Darwin, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and parts in between.  We flew home via a week in Hawaii to celebrate my 60th birthday!

Everyone is saying how tanned I look just now - I guess I am, after all that time in warm climates!  We saw 47C in Melbourne during the Australian Open tennis tournament - you don't go out sunbathing in those temperatures!

Very exciting news this month about my first gallery show (see below).  And a couple of pictures of quilts made by students.

I hope you had a lovely Valentine's Day - next: start pulling out the green!

Happy quilting,

At our gig in Altona VIC I got to meet up with
two gals I only knew on the Internet:
all three of us had done the Scatterdays challenge
on our blogs!
We are standing in front of a portion of the AIDS quilt.

Refractions: Mud, Brush and Needle

I am beyond delighted to announce the opening of my first gallery show: Refractions.  I've been working on the quilts for this show for a year and a half - I've shown you some of them in previous newsletters.

This show was my idea, knowing I was going to be home for a stretch of time, and looking for a new challenge.  I asked two good friends to join me in each making 10 pieces loosely based on the theme of Refractions.  Eileen McGann and I used to sing together in a group called Trilogy.  We met in Ontario and both of us kept moving west until we got to Vancouver Island. She has become a wonderful painter.  Louise Parsons and I met in Calgary, where she was already a marvellous functional potter.  This was a chance for all of us to push the envelope a bit, hang out together some, and celebrate our work together.

I think it's going to be a fun and beautiful show.  All the pieces are for sale (and that was a further challenge for me, who never sells her work!)

Watch next month's newsletter for pictures of the opening and the show.
Of course, If you can make it to the show, you are very welcome!

Students' Work

I've received these two pictures from students in my Mock Mola and Notan classes, with their finished pieces. Very nice work!

Pat Powell's Mock Mola leaves                     Donna Carley shows off her magnificent
                                       Notan (with ribbon!)

If you have finished any pieces you started in class with me, please send pictures, so I can show everyone what you've done!

I'll be teaching both of these classes quite a bit on the upcoming tour. If we're coming to your area, make sure you sign up!

What I'm Working On

We were home for three weeks in December, before we left for Australia, and I took the opportunity to make my second-last quilt for the Refractions show. It took 50 hours (everyone always asks "How long did it take to do that?", so I've kept track!), worth every moment.  I'm currently adding "bling" (Swarovsky crystals) to make it really glitter.

I'm in the middle of making my final Refractions quilt (no pressure - the show only opens on Wednesday!!!) and after that, I'll be making some class samples for all my workshops during the next tour.
